Week 9

I've seemed to have missed a couple of weeks updates on my blog due to having very little disposable time at home. Having majority of my time taken up by work outside of college hours I rarely have time to get near a computer.. I'll be doing my best to make up for lost time on my blog so watch this space.

Week 4

In our first lecture of week four Colin talked to us about the use of FTP to upload websites to the web, he also told us about certain Unix Commands needed to use FTP and to upload our website to Praxis.

In our second lecture of the week we spoke more about our Google Online Marketing Challenge. We were split into our groups and we choose the website that we wanted to work with to increase their online traffic. My group is the largest group with six members, Me, Alan, Sara, Brian, Fiach and Spohie. The website we have chosen to work with is http://www.roomrenovator.ie/.

Unfortunately I could not make it to the lab but i was told by my classmates of how Colin showed them more on how to upload a website using FTP. I do not believe that there is a video of the lab and so I hope to learn more about how to upload the video from my classmates.

Fair Use (Week 3)

We were asked by Colin to find an example of where Fair Use may have, or should have come into discussion with a song or other creation, here is the example I am using.

The song is Hard Knock Life written by Jay Z and was also the Title Track for his album "Hard Knock Life" released on September 29, 1998. While all of Jay Z's lyrics in the song are his own, the chorus is a sample of the song "Its The Hard Knock Life" from the 1977 Broadway Musical, "Annie".

Hard Knock Life - Jay Z

And the original song, "Its The Hard Knock Life" from the 1999 movie of the Musical "Annie"

I feel that this is a good example of fair use and i believe that Jay Z was entitled to use a small snippet of the song from the musical. I don't think it would have been fair if he was sued by the producers of "Annie".

Week 3

In class during week 3 we discussed some more interesting topics. We learned about Copyright and Patents which are used by Artists of many walks of life to earn money for their creations, i.e. Musicians, Artists and Authors. The issue of Fair Use was also discussed in class and how some artists can use parts of other artists work and get away with it, while others are caught out and forced to pay the original artist for using his or her work. Colin asked us to find a piece of work in which one artist has taken pieces of another artists work and put it into his or her own creation, we are to update our blog with the song we find suitable.

Weeks 1 & 2

In class during week one we discussed setting up our blogs and what way we should manage them to try and obtain the best marks for our efforts. The blogs will be updated on a weekly basis at least, with information on what we did in the classes during the week. Colin emphasized the importance of spelling and grammar in our posts and stated that this was a minimum requirement for the assignment.

During the classes in the second week of semester two we discussed privacy online and how we feel about posting online. I personally don't mind sharing personal stuff online as long as it isn't too personal. I have very few privacy settings enabled on my Facebook and Twitter accounts and I am very open on these sites regarding my opinions. I would not say something online that I would not say in public however as I understand once something is said on the internet, it is very hard to get rid of it in the future. Although I am very open online this is my first blog and it is a big change for me so it will be a little bit strange for the first few posts I expect.

Web Publishing

This is my first blog post just to get things up and running, my class have been asked to set up a blog as part of our current Web Publishing Module. I will be updating this blog a number of times a week for at least ten weeks and will more than likely just be talking about general college life, my experiences in this course and my views on current affairs.
